About the Journal

The University of North Carolina at Charlotte Undergraduate Research Journal (URJ) was an open-access and peer reviewed journal of scholarly work conducted by undergraduate students. The goals of this journal are to: 1) provide a platform through which undergraduate students who conduct novel research at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte may publish their work, 2) allow students on the review board to experience the peer review process, and 3) share research that is conducted at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte with the Charlotte community and beyond. Manuscripts undergo a rigorous review process by a board of student and faculty reviewers. This journal accepted scholarly work from multiple disciplines. 

URJ published from 2021 to 2022. In 2025, it transitioned to a new journal, ETHEL Undergraduate Research Journal. You can find new issues and submit manuscripts at etheljournal.com. ETHEL is UNC Charlotte’s student-run undergraduate research journal. ETHEL is committed to celebrating and publishing research across all disciplines in its many various forms. Highlighting faculty mentored research, ETHEL’s mission is to encourage and support undergraduate research and creative activities across campus and build connections between students and faculty. ETHEL also aims to make all aspects of research more approachable to undergraduate students. From initial discussions with faculty to publication and the peer review process, the ETHEL Board promotes student growth and facilitates workshops and activities throughout the year. The ETHEL Journal is printed once per year in the spring, with submissions accepted during the fall semester.

ETHEL publishes a print and online journal. The print journal features traditional research articles and papers while the website offers flexibility for students to publish research across all mediums, such as images, videos, audio, and short form writing. This platform enables students to pursue innovative and creative methods of research types and dissemination. The website, etheljournal.com, also features additional material like a student run podcast and additional information and resources for research.

This journal site is an archive and is not currently accepting new submissions. In addition to this site’s archives, both URJ and ETHEL are archived at UNC Charlotte’s institutional repository, Niner Commons.
